MySpace sues alleged ”Spam King”

Myspace, one of the most popular social-networking sites online, has filed a lawsuit Friday in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles against a spammer who used compromised accounts to send out spam.

Myspace, one of the most popular social-networking sites online, has filed a lawsuit Friday in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles against a spammer who used compromised accounts to send out spam. MySpace states that Scott Richter one of the world’s top three spammers also known as the “Spam King” gained access to a number of MySpace user accounts via phishing schemes, or took control of accounts that had already been phished. Richter was said to have used the service’s bulletin feature, to send unsolicited messages to all of a user’s “friends,” that advertised products ranging from Polo shirts to cell phone ringtones.

This is not the first time Richter has been sued, in 2003 he was ordered to pay $7 million in a lawsuit filed by Microsoft after Richter refused to settle the dispute for $100,000.

Myspace is seeking monetary damages, repayment of all profits gained as a result of the activity, and wishes to ban Richter and his affiliates from Myspace.
