Memphis Documentary Film Undefeated Wins at Oscars 2012

On Sunday, the Memphis documentary “Undefeated” won the Oscar for Best “Documentary Feature” at the 84th Academy Awards. Directed by Daniel Lindsay and T.J. Martin, “Undefeated” tells the story of Memphis’ Manassas High football team through the eyes of three student athletes and the lead volunteer coach, Bill Courtney, who helped turned them into Tiger champions as they faced their struggles.

The documentary, which has gotten raved reviews and first debuted at the South by Southwest (SXSW) Film Festival, as reported on MemphisRap.com, will be getting a remake. The remake will have hip-hop music mogul and businessman Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs on as an executive producer.

After the win, an elated Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs, tweeted, “Dreams do come true!! Hard work pays off!!”

Combs later came back to congraulate director T.J Martin, “And special Congrats to @TJMckayMartin-Hes the 1st African American director to win an Academy Award!!!”

As for the directors, they are extremely excited over the win, which was up against other great documentaries “Hell and Back Again,” “If a Tree Falls: A Story of the Earth Liberation Front,” “Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory” and “Pina.”

Meanwhile, Undefeated is slated to open in select theaters Friday, March 2 in Memphis, Dallas, Houston, Chicago, Baltimore, San Francisco, and a few other cities.
