Grammy-nominated female rapper Remy Ma born Remy Smith, 26, most noted for her feature on the song “Lean Back” with Fat Joe’s Terror Squad, has been convicted on four criminal charges including two counts of first-degree assault, attempted coercion, and criminal possession of a weapon for shooting her friend Makeda Barnes-Joseph while hanging out in New York on July 14, 2007.

Remy Ma believed that Makeda Barnes-Joseph had taken $3,000 from her purse which caused her to address Barnes-Joseph and enter the driver’s side of Barnes-Joseph’s car about 3:30 a.m. the morning of July 14, 2007. The end result, Remy Ma pulled out a .45-caliber automatic and loaded it with hollow-point bullets which went off as the two struggled over Barnes-Joseph’s purse. The bullet ended up piercing her colon and hitting her rectum and landing her three weeks in the hospital.

Although Remy Ma was cleared of the charges for gang assault, witness tampering, witness intimidation and assault in a separate incident in which her associates are accused of beating up the boyfriend of a witness she still faces 5 to 25 years in prison for charges that stuck.

After the verdict was read, Remy Ma was taken into custody.

According to Remy Ma’s attorney, Ivan Fisher, the shooting was accidental and the victim exaggerated inorder to win an ample sum of money in a separate civil suit.
