Drumma Boy says it was really his father that was the inspiration behind creating the scholarship.

“That was really my father, just trying to pass his legacy [on],” Drumma Boy stated to DX Daily, adding that his father saw his connection and impact that he makes on kids and basically said “we should do a scholarship for students.”

The scholarship isn’t just for all students however, but for those who scholastically work hard to obtain an A or B grade status.

Meanwhile, Dr. Gholson revealed in the school’s centennial newsletter that his motivation as well came from his desire ‘to support the music school and impact literacy levels’ for the Memphis community adding that, they recognize ‘music students are usually strong readers’ and they hope to strengthen student’s skills of reading.

An alumni of the University of Memphis himself, the music producer Drumma Boy, who majored in music business, added that since high school he wanted to be a musician and knows that it “requires extreme dedication” but he believes ‘everyone should be exposed to arts and music.’

Requiring a GPA of 2.5 at least and a good academic standing, the James and Christopher Gholson Scholarship Fund is awarded once a year to student applicants who are accepted also based on an essay they write focused on the importance of reading and more.
