Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton says he won’t apply for the position of superintendent for Memphis city schools.

The Memphis City Mayor who was Memphis City Schools superintendent for 12 years prior to his 17th year in office sent in a letter to school board commissioner Kenneth Whalum Jr., speaking on his commitment to education, but he cannot consider becoming the next superintendent at this time.

The job of superintendent of Memphis City Schools has been vacant since last fall. Currently, the acting Superintendent is Mr. Dan Ward, 73, who is a retired educator and Lieutenant Colonel in the U.S. Air Force. Those interested in applying for the Superintendent can still apply before the deadline which is April 24th. The job seeks an individual with visionary leadership and strong administrative skills to lead a district of 119,000 students. Salary for the successful candidate will be in the range of $260,000, plus an excellent comprehensive benefits package.
