For more than 2 years, Memphis has handled more than 5,000 pit bulls at the Memphis Animal Services, whereas many of them have been used for illegal activities and abused. More than 15,000 animals last year has been processed by the city’s Division of Public Services and Neighborhoods. More than 4,100 or 27 percent were euthanized due to either an illness or supposedly aggression.

Pitbulls are known worldwide as the chosen dog for most gangs and street fighting. Memphis is known to have at least 30-50 pitbull terriers at the animal services shelter for either human bite cases or seized from drug houses or animal-fighting rings. When these pits are seized they tend to go to the Memphis Animal Services or somewhere similiar and then they are put down.

With an exception the Memphis Shelby County Humane Society does accept pit bulls which they put up for adoption, but they find it hard to adopt out because they have to be certain that they are absolutely going to the perfect family and not someone looking to use the dog for other reasons. Due to this they have a tight screening process.

Pit bulls are the number 1 euthanized animals at the shelters and only one out of around 600 gets a permanent home.

Did you know Pits can sell from $400 to $800 on the street and as cheap as $150 when a valid certificate is not involved. Being that Pits are still a very popular dog to have mainly because of it’s protective superiority and also due to it being a number 1 rapper’s video choice dog, this makes Pitbulls a very profitable breed for dog breeders as well.

On another important note, it is also illegal in Memphis for anyone under the age of 18 to walk a Pit.
