Producer Mike Curb announced that he will be giving Rhodes College a $5 million grant to fund a music institute, to focus on the rich musical legacy in Memphis.

“Our hope is that this new institute for music at Rhodes can study history- music history primarily,” Mike Curb stated to media.

The new program is stated to focus on research projects that study the history of Stax Records and it’s success. Students will also be studying the history of other record labels such as Sun Records, Hi Records and the Memphis music scene.

“It’s very important to know where music has been, and how it was created, if we are going to understand where we are going to go in the future,” Mike Curb said.

Students who attend the Mike Curb institute will also take part in schools such as Stax Academy (music academy) by mentoring youth and helping them select appropriate career paths in the music industry.

The Mike Curb institute will be stationed on Rhodes College campus in Memphis, TN.
