Gladys Knight returned to her hometown of Atlanta, GA to deliver the national anthem for the 2019 Super Bowl LIII on Sunday, February 3, 2019.

Knight was among those who received criticism for agreeing to perform following protests surrounding Colin Kaepernick who allegedly is believed to have been blacklisted by the NFL due to the kneeling movement he started in 2016 during the national anthem to bring attention to racial issues.

In addition, stars were also criticized for wanting to take part in the 2019 Super Bowl LIII after predominantly white pop-rock band Maroon 5 was selected to headline in a major black city.

Gladys Knight responded to being criticized about performing and stated that although Kaepernick kneeled at a NFL game and protested police violence and issues, she was at the forefront of the civil rights movement, so she believes in performing.

In Gladys Knight style, the singer wore a white dress that was embellished around the neckline and ankle boots to match the embellishment. The music was classic as well as the singing by Gladys, 74, was timeless as she delivered a perfect rendition of The Star-Spangled Banner.
