The Second Night of the Sweet 16 Matchups

The Sweet 16 matchups ended tonight. Tennessee defeated Ohio State 76-73. The Vols brought the energy as they always do. They completely broke down everyone else and made them run their offense through Ohio State’s guard Evan Turner but he was not enough. This will be Tennessee’s first trip to the Elite 8 in the school’s history. The Vols were put out dating all the way back from 1967 including 2007 when they were upset by the same Ohio State team they beat tonight.

Baylor took on St. Mary’s in the next game. Well, you really couldn’t call this a game. Seriously, this matchup was over in the 1st half. Baylor went into the locker room with a 35pt lead over St. Mary’s. The end result was 72-49 but believe me, it was much worse than that throughout the game. Clearly, Baylor came to play tonight. With this win tonight Baylor won a school record 28 games and they will try and go for 29 games against Duke on Sunday.

The game everyone thought would be lopsided was Northern Iowa vs Michigan St. The Spartans pushed Northern Iowa aside with a 59-52 victory tonight. Even with their leading scorer point guard Kalin Lucas out injured Michigan State found a way to get it done on both ends of the floor. Northern Iowa was fresh off of an upset against #1 Kansas. Northern Iowa was picked as a favorite to win this matchup but I guess no one told Michigan State this. The high man tonight for the Spartans was Korie Lucious. Hitting one of the shots that turned the game around he showed the world that Michigan was NOT ready to go home just yet.

The nightcap game was Purdue and Duke. The Duke Blue Devils cruised fantastically over Purdue tonight with a 70-57 victory. The strange thing is that Duke was down most of the 1st half. They rallied back to lead by 1pt going into halftime by a jumper from Nolan Smith. After the opening minutes of the 2nd half this game was all Blue Devils. Coach K and his squad reached their 20th straight Elite 8 appearance.

Goodbye Sweet 16 hello Elite 8. The lineups for Sunday are Duke vs Baylor and Tennessee vs Michigan St. The exciting one of this bunch is the Tennessee vs. Michigan St. one. Tomorrow kicks off the first games of the Elite 8 with West Virginia vs. Kentucky and Butler vs. Kansas St. Wow, who doesn’t love this NCAA tournament? These games get better and better as the guys fight and scrap because they are NOT ready to go home.
