2010 Santa Anita Derby Fight, Punches Thrown; Garrett Gomez vs Victor Espinoza

The 2010 Santa Anita Derby races were like no other this year. A derby that ultimately ended with suspensions and fines was the talk of the day. Jockey Victor Espinoza was suspended for 3 days and Garrett Gomez fined $750 for fighting.

Gomez’s horse was at the five-sixteenth pole and shuffled back on the turn when Espinoza’s horse angled the rail. Upset that he lost his chance in winning and had to settle for 3rd place, Gomez approached Espinoza.

Gomez began yelling frantically at Victor blaming him for his loss. The two then started getting close and Gomez punched Victor. They got tangled up and suspensions and fines flew.

Espinoza’s suspension begins April 11th.
