A C Wharton Jr., Memphis Mayor, presented the Memphis City Council with a budget proposal of $626 million Tuesday.
The first option consists of restructuring the city’s bond debt which we’ll give the city $41 million in savings and also do a budget cut, excluding the police department and fire department, and that will give the city an extra $9 million.
The other option given was a budget cut of 8% from all the city government departments including the police and fire departments.
Wharton Jr then added that either plan will lead to a short term solution that will give the city “breathing room.”
