U.S. Marshal Shooting of Man, Brandon Webber, in Frayser Memphis, Causes Unrest

On yesterday evening, Wednesday, June 12, 2019, the Memphis’ Frayser community was in an uproar following a U.S. Marshal-involved shooting that ended in the death of a young Frayser man in the North Memphis community.

Officials have identified the man that was killed in the shooting as 20 year-old Brandon D. Webber.

According to Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, the U.S. Marshal Service’s Gulf Coast Regional Fugitive Task Force were at Webber’s home at around 7PM due to him being wanted on multiple felony warrants.

Officials say, Webber reportedly was getting into his car when he allegedly started to ram the car into the U.S. Marshal’s vehicle and showed a weapon. Many are now questioning the validity of this reporting.

What resulted was Brandon D. Webber being shot at more than 16-20 times in the front yard of his family’s home.

Shortly following this, the community began gathering then protesting as Memphis police started to arrived in large numbers on the scene to control the growing crowd in the community.

At some point, the crowd increased with angry protesters who began throwing bricks, rocks, bottles and more at the police demanding answers and wanting to know why excessive force was used.

To disperse the weary and upset crowd, the police used tear gas.

Because some people were throwing rocks at the police, a few media outlets are calling the incident a “riot,” yet not everyone thinks that “riot” is an appropriate term.

One of those who shared their opinion is Shelby County Commissioner and Mayoral candidate Tami Sawyer.

Ms. Sawyer is not the only political figure that has commented on the incident. Tennessee State Representative Antonio Parkinson, a long-time and well-known supporter and voice for the Raleigh-Frayser community, also shared his thoughts.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to all involved in the incident in Frayser. The Frayser community is comprised of good, hard working people who love their community. The community wants answers into tonight's incident. We are asking for calm and restraint by all and complete transparency in the investigation of tonight's officer involved shooting.

Webber’s family including his father, Sonny Webber, were among the crowd during the intense incident with the police as they were distraught over the excessive force that the Marshals used that took the life of Sonny’s young son.

According to some over social media that seem to be familiar with Brandon Webber, he was well-known in his local neighborhood and was a University of Memphis college student as well as a father of a young child of his own.

Currently, officials say that the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) is currently investigating the incident.
