The Bar-Kays celebrates 50 Years in Music Business

Memphis iconic funk, soul and R&B singers The Bar-Kays are celebrating five decades in the music business.

The news of The Bar-Kays’ 50 years in the music business comes just a little over a year after the iconic band released a new single and album both entitled “Grown Folks” — their first studio album since 1988.

With the new album Grown Folks, the remaining members of the band, James Alexander and Larry Dodson, re-introduced themselves to past fans and the younger hip-hop generation with the album which was produced by James Alexander’s son, award winning hip-hop music producer Jazze Pha, real name Phalon Anton Alexander.

Conceived in 1964 and beginning their band back in Memphis, TN in 1966 as the house band of Memphis record label Stax Records, it was in 1967 when the band was chosen to play for Otis Redding. Following being chosen to play for Otis Redding, a tragic plane crash occurred taking the lives of four of the members of The Bar-Kays, along with the life of Otis Redding on December 6, 1967.

Band members Phalon Jones, the original Bar-Kays sax player whom Jazze Phae was named after, Jimmy King (guitar), Ronnie Caldwell (electric organ) and Carl Cunningham (drums), all died in the plane crash.

Congratulations to The Bar-Kays on achieving such a milestone of 50 years in the business.
