Tennessee Couple Suing Government for Right to Name Their Baby What They Want

A Tennessee couple is suing the state government for the right to choose the name they want for their baby.

Kim Sarubbi and Carl Abramson wanted to name their newborn son Camden Sabr but the government won’t allow them.

Sabr is a name that the couple came up with by combining the letters of their two last names.

They put the name on the birth certificate just like their two older children who were both born in other states that did not object to the change of their last names.

The couple received a call from Tennessee’s Vital Records office telling them Tennessee law mandates the baby to carry either the father’s last name or both the names of the mother’s and father’s last name.

Tennessee law does not permit them to create a surname, so the couple could not use Sabr as little Camden’s surname.

The Brentwood, TN couple, Kim and her husband Carl are taking the matter to court suing the state in an attempt to change the law.
