As students returned back from winter break, a shooting at a Tacoma, Washington highschool left one student shot to death in the hallway as classes were starting early Wednesday morning.
“How he got that far isn’t clear,” Detective Chris Taylor said.
The victim that was killed was not identified, but police spokesman Mark Fulghum said no one else was hurt in the incident.
Fulghum said police were trying to determine what prompted the attack.
“People came out of their classroom, and they heard something that sounded like fireworks, and they just saw the kid laying on the ground,” a student told reporters.
“I saw a girl running out of the cafeteria just screaming that someone was going to shoot her. And then she ran down the stairs of the courtyard and just went home.”
Freshman Sam Sao, 14, said she was in the lunchroom, waiting for the bell to ring, when the shots were fired.
“Everyone was yelling, ‘Get in the gym! Get in the gym!'” she said. “At first we thought it was a fight. Then the teachers started getting on the tables and screaming.”
For safety reasons the school was immediately locked down after the shooting by police. Parents were able up to pick up their children who were transported to another highschool. Classes were cancelled for the remainder of the day.
