Obama Announces Support Of Gay Marriage: ‘Same Sex Couples Should Be Able To Get Married’

On today (Wednesday, May 9, 2012), President Barack Obama became the first sitting president to give support on gay rights and gay marriage by sharing his personal views after much consideration.

In an snippet of an interview with ABC’s Robin Roberts, which will be released in full on Thursday on “Good Morning America,” President Barack Obama calmly made sure to express that what he spoke was his personal thoughts after speaking with gay staff members, family and friends as well as after thinking about those who fight for their lives and our lives in the military that are gay and would like to be married to the one that they love. President Barack Obama told Roberts, he believes that gay and lesbian Americans should be treated fairly and equally.

Obama stated that over the course of several years that he has spoken with friends and family and neighbors and thought about the members of his staff that are committed to same-sex monogamous relationships who are raising children together.

“…when I think about those soldiers or airmen or marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf and yet feel constrained, even now that Don’t Ask Don’t Tell is gone, because they are not able to commit themselves in a marriage, at a certain point I’ve just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married.”

Prior to this announcement, Vice President Joseph Biden stated he was comfortable with same-sex marriage when he spoke with NBC’s “Meet The Press.”

While this may be great news for the gay community, on Tuesday, North Carolina passed an amendment that bans gay marriage as they stand by marriage as being between a man and a woman.

When election time draws even closer, will Obama’s decision to reveal his preference to support gay marriage hurt him at the polls or will everyone support change and equality amongst all without judgement?
