National Football League (NFL) Denver Broncos cornerback Darrent Williams, 24, was enjoying New Year’s Day just like everyone else when after leaving a nightclub in a stretch Hummer limosine, he was shot and killed.
Darrent Willimas was accompanied by two other people, a man and a woman (names withheld) who were seated comfortably in the back of the Hummer who were also shot.
According to CNN the Hummer limosine was shot at least 8 times killing Darrent Williams and wounding the other two passengers although the Denver Police Department was not confirming that Williams was killed.
“I learned from the Denver police department that this incident has occurred,” Williams’ agent, Jeff Griffin said Monday morning. “No other details have been released. I sincerely offer my condolences and feelings to his family.”
“Losing a fine young man such as Darrent Williams leaves me speechless with sadness,” said Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan. “We all know that Darrent was an excellent player, but as a person, he was a first-class young man who brightened every room with his smile, attitude and personality. I cannot express how heartsick I feel at this loss. All of our players and coaches are completely shocked by this terrible tragedy, and my deepest condolences go out to the entire Williams family.”
Witnesses reported to Denver police that a disagreement between two groups of people at a bar near 10th Avenue and Broadway may have led to the shooting, but police are also investigating other possible motives according to Denver police spokesperson Sonny Jackson.
The Hummer reportedly left the nightclub about 2 a.m. when a white Suburban or Tahoe with tinted windows pulled up next to the limo and started shooting multiple shots, Sony Jackson stated.
Denver police are still searching for the suspects which they are not identifying.
The limousine comany owner of A Adavantage Limousine Service who rented out the limo to Darrent Williams stated that limos rent out for $250 an hour on New Year’s Eve and this is the first time something has happened like this.
Darrent Williams played his last game on New Year’s Eve in a 26-23 overtime loss to the San Francisco 49ers which eventually elminated his team from the playoffs.
