More than 40 dogs were seized from Michael Vick’s property, and some are now with experienced foster families; one had to be euthanized, but there are still remaining dogs available..
More than 40 dogs were seized from Michael Vick’s property earlier this year and have been held in shelters since April. The court appointed animal law expert Rebecca Huss as the guardian of the allegedly abused dogs.Huss, who is a law professor at Valparaiso University School of Law, said that some of the dogs that showed no signs of aggression or threat are now with experienced foster families for further evaluation. However, if a dog is later shown to be a danger to humans or other household pets, or cannot be placed in a proper environment, it could be euthanized. Of the 49 pit bulls seized from Vick’s property, Huss had to order the euthanization of one after it became a dangerous threat to animal behavior examiners.
Huss has now made the remaining dogs available to animal rescue organizations. The canines have been divided into four categories according to aggression levels and are now available to non-profit animal rescue organizations with at least three years of animal-handling experience.
An application for animal organizations to acquire one or more of the dogs can be found here: http://valpo.edu/law/assets/docs/RescueOrganizationApplication.pdf
Suspended Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick pleaded guilty to federal dog fighting charges. Vick and his co-defendants are also facing Virginia state charges. Sentencing is set for later this year.
