Redhead Wandera Hitchye, 23, a Memphis contestant which was seen by America pushing the camera after singing “A Change is Gonna Come” by Sam Cooke tells what really happened on Memphis local radio morning show “TK in the Morning” aired on Hot 107.1 FM.
You saw Simon saying there are “so many singers like you trying to get deals right now.” Paula says, “You’re a good singer, but there’s nothing that makes you … ” and “There’s nothing special,” Randy fills in. Wandera leaves, and is shown very angry and pushes the camera out of her face, but is what America saw really what happened?
According to Wandera Hitchye the American Idol audition clip was false. The contestant stated that she didn’t perform in front of Simon, Paula or Randy which everyone saw on their television screen. The tape was instead edited to make it look like she did according to the contestant. In fact, Hitchye actually performed in front of the producer of the show Nigel Lythgoe who told her that he loved her singing, but didn’t like her performance.
Hitchye made it to the third round before she was cut and had even saw the panel of judges. Which possibly is the reason why she was angry since she had been cut even before seeing the judges (Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul, and Randy Jackson).
Before ending her conversation with radio personality TK, Hitchye stated that she was waiting on the television stations to call her so she could speak the truth about the show and the audition.
While Hitchye didn’t seem to have made it, shy Melinda Doolittle, Country/Blues singer Danielle McCulloch and Philip Stacy made it through in Memphis as well as nineteen other contestants totalling 22 in all.
“A change is going to come”, states Wandera Hitchye.
