Memphis Police Union President Fired

Last week J.D. Sewell, Memphis Police Association President, was fired. Sewell was fired because of his interference with a union member, Sergeant Bettie Carter’s investigation.

Carter was charged with animal cruelty because of her two dogs who had to be put down due to starvation. Carter then missed her court date, and that’s when Sewell called the judge to try and get Carter’s arrest warrant dismissed.

After this incident, a hearing officer soon released Sewell from his job stating that he interfered with an investigation. Later on, an official stated that there were more reasons to why he was relieved of duty, ergo his overall record.

Both local union and city leaders protested Sewell’s firing by protesting in front of the police director’s office. Sewell’s overall record contained both bad and good reviews.

No further info has been uncovered regarding the situation.
