Memphis Mayor Herenton To Resign If Hired As School Superintendent

Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton announced he plans to resign as Mayor of Memphis only is he is hired as the Superintendent of Memphis City Schools, a position that the Mayor held prior to becoming Mayor.

As recently reported on MemphisRap.com, Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton announced he plans to resign as Mayor of Memphis after being elected for a fifth term. In a resignation letter to Keith McGee, the city’s chief administrative officer Herenton stated, “I am deeply grateful to the citizens of Memphis for granting me the honor and privilege to serve. I have given my best in the interest of making Memphis a better city for all. I hear another call and am duty bound to respond. History will judge whether or not I achieved the purpose for which I was called to serve.”

In the latest on this story, Mayor Herenton has now announced that he will resign only is he is hired as the Superintendent of Memphis City Schools, a position that the Mayor held prior to becoming Mayor for 12 years. Apparently, the Mayor has a good chance at becoming the Memphis City Schools Superintendent again since that position is open after Dr. Carol R. Johnson who was Superintendent from 2003
