Memphis Mayor Gets A Pay Raise


Memphis City Council decided Tuesday evening to hike the mayor’s annual salary from $160,000 to $171,500.

Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton will get an $11,500 pay raise effective January 1, 2008. Memphis City Council decided Tuesday evening to hike the mayor’s annual salary from $160,000 to $171,500.

Carol Chumney, who lost this year’s mayoral vote to Herenton, was one of five council members who voted against the raise.

With his current salary, Herenton is one of the highest paid mayors in the United States. After his recent raise takes effect, he will be just $24,500 shy of New York mayor Michael Bloomberg’s salary.
