A list of America’s best cities for barbecue published by Travel + Leisure Magazine has sparked controversy but not just because they ranked Nashville number one over Memphis, TN.
Controversy stems around another article published on website Nashville Scene, which mocks the listing with an article sending a “Memo to Memphis.”
In the article on the website, it talks about Travel + Leisure’s number one placement of Nashville as the top barbecue city in America.
Although the author, Steve Cavendish, seems to be actually poking fun at the magazine’s opinion, his possible attempt at humor and sarcasm has come across to readers as in ‘poor taste.’ Commenters have shared their outrage at the joking insults targeted at Memphis in the article on their website as well as on social media sites such as Facebook.
At one point in the article, it seems to question the intelligence of Memphian saying, “Travel + Leisure” is pronounced “Travel AND Leisure” not “Travel Plus Leisure,” adding “Memphis we’re going to need you to move a little faster than that.”
That’s just one of the joking attempts in the article, which has some Memphians ‘hot under the collar’ or, to say the least, ‘not happy’ with the article.
