Coming off of a major successful year with their runaway hit hip-hop single “Thrift Shop,” Macklemore and Ryan Lewis took to the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards stage to give an emotional performance of their pro-gay rights anthem “Same Love.”
The Seattle rappers, who had a huge night at the VMA’s winning the “Best Hip Hop Video” for their follow-up to “Thrift Shop” single entitled “Can’t Hold Us,” also took home the VMA for “Best Video With A Social Message” for their “Same Love” music video.
The Seattle rap-duo gave an acceptance speech stating that their win stood for a lot more than their other nominations.
The hip hop duo spoke on gay rights, which they referred to as human rights, while expressing a heartfelt thanks to fans and supporters.
The 2013 MTV Video Music Awards were held at the Barclays Center Arena in Brooklyn, New York.
