Denver Police have stated that they are investigating a disagreement that happened at Shelter nightclub that occurred before the shooting which may have contributed to the shooting. According to witnesses, the confrontation wasn’t physical, but just taunts and wasn’t directed at Williams. It was reported that the violence occurred hours after the Broncos were eliminated from playoff contention.
Darrent Williams was pronounced dead at a local hospital and the cause of his death was confirmed by the medical examiner’s office in a statement which stated that he died from a single gunshot wound to the neck.
Since his death the Broncos coach Mike Shanahan has spoken highly of Darrent, “I don’t think he had a guy that wasn’t his friend and there wasn’t a day that there wasn’t a smile on his face.”
“His heart was so big, he was always giving to those who didn’t have,” said Williams’ mother, Rosalind Williams, who flew to Denver from Fort Worth. “It didn’t even have to be for an agency or a charity. If he knew you didn’t have, he’d hand it out of his pocket.”
According to Coach Shanahan, a memorial service will be held tomorrow, and the funeral will take place Jan. 6, 2007.
Denver Police Department spokesman Sonny Jackson states that they have had no new information.
“We’re just waiting for the right tip to come in, because we know somebody knows what transpired,” he said.
According to sources basketball player forward Kenyon Martin (Denver Nuggets) of the National Basketball Association (NBA) said that the Broncos and Nuggets players were at the Shelter nightclub to celebrate a New Year’s Eve birthday party for Martin. It was stated that Darrent Williams’s name was on a flyer advertising the party, according to Martin.
