Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Three 6 Mafia Blamed For Codeine Abuse in U.S.

If you’re into rap, especially southern rap, then you’ve likely heard of the Purple Drank aka the Lean or Sizzurp, which is a mixture of a drink with cough syrup which contains codeine and promethazine — well it seems that now a spike in codeine abuse, which has spread all over the country, is because of the likes of artists such as Kanye West, Lil’ Wayne and the Academy Award-winning Three 6 Mafia who praise the abuse in songs, well at least, according to the Journal Sentinel. Hmmmm..

According to the Sentinel, the abuse of the cough suppressant containing codeine and promethazine which rose to prominence in Houston dubbed the “The City of Syrup,” was due to factors like “Screw Music” and songs by artists including “Ye,” “Weezy “and “3-6 Mafia”.

The report stems from a trial set for Green Bay Packers defensive end Johnny Jolly, a Houston native, whose trial this week on charges that he possessed between 200 and 400 grams of codeine proves that the codeine abuse habit still is around and hasn’t been kicked yet even nearing 2010.

Jolly was reportedly arrested on July 8, 2008, outside a Houston nightclub, when police smelled codeine in a soda bottle and two Styrofoam cups filled with ice inside Jolly’s car, according to the Sentinel report.

Well, what do you think, has codeine abuse risen and are hip hop and artists like Kanye West, Lil’ Wayne and Three 6 Mafia the blame? This will surely produce mixed reactions if profiled or polled.

  1. Man those dudes r crazy how u gon blame somebody else for choices other people make. It ain’t like nobody made u drink lean. It’s really stupid people r always tryn put the blame off on somebody else. So whoever wrote that article needs to shut their damn mouth n worry bout ur own problems b4 u try to worry bout somebody else buisness n like dude said y is kanye in this catagory. He only has like one or two songs where he refers to drinkin lean. Y’all need to grow up n quit blamin errybody else for ur own problems if u drink lean then that’s a decision u made, not kanye, 36, or Wayne.

  2. this is like blaming video games for violence…or blaming marilyn manson for columbine…Think about everything else rappers use in their lyrics…weed, coke, x pills, murders, robberies, theft…and you wanna blame them for codeine?

  3. “Hmmm…” is right.

Now I’m all for rhetorically put the blame on rappers for a national crisis, its practically a American pastime at this point. However, there’s one itsy-bitsy little detail I’d like to clarify: Kanye has neither used codeine nor “praised” its abuse in his songs. For his part, he’s gone on record to state that he does do drugs; apparently they “scare” him. I believe the instance they were, incorrectly, thinking of when blacklisted him was in “Through the Wire”:

“I drink a Boost for breakfast, and Ensure for dizzert/Somebody ordered pancakes I just sip the sizzurp”

He was actually being literal here, well more or less. The (true) story goes that he rapped the song inside a hospital while his mouth was wired shut as the result of a surgical procedure following a severe car crash in which his jaw was shattered to pieces. Ouch. Though he managed to rap his verses, he could not however eat solid foods, hence the line. In short, he was NOT referring to the slang term for codeine.

As for Lil Wayne and the rest, guilty as charged. Might wanna throw Paul Wall in there too while you’re at it.

I mean honestly, if you’re gonna scapegoat a small group people based on little to no concrete evidence, at least get your conjecture straight. We have a tradition to uphold here.

  4. How the f--k is Kanye to blame for syrup drinking? Lil Wayne makes sense, deffinitly 3 six mafia but Kanye, that doesn’t make sense.
