Dr. Willie W. Herenton was elected mayor of Memphis for a fifth term yesterday evening. The most talked about thing the next day is not of his victory but his victory speech.
To begin, once Herenton makes his way up to the podium, some say he was apologetic and some say racist. Herenton of course thanked his loyal voters and then went on to say he has done some things wrong and it will change. He also said that Memphians need to decide whether or not they want a divided city. “I didn’t separate us and I want to tell you something else too: If you don’t care, they’ll work a game on you.”
There is still controversy between races in the city of Memphis, and Willie Herenton is still in office.
