A 15 year-old Chicago teen girl and majorette, who had recently performed at President Barack Obama’s Inauguration, was shot dead on Tuesday as she stood with a group of 12 friends talking near her high school.
According to reports, Hadiya Pendleton, a student at King College Prep High School, was amongst friends while standing in a park as they shielded themselves from the rain when a gun man opened fire and struck her in the back with a bullet. Pendleton was rushed to University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital where she died approximately an hour later from her injuries. Another victim had been also shot and was being treated for a gunshot to the leg.
On Wednesday, no suspect had been arrested for her murder, however, authorities have stated the she was not the intended target and it is believed the gunman may have mistook the group as being a part of a rival. In fact, new video has been released showing that the teen promoted anti-gang violence messages four years prior to her untimely death.
Due to the death of Hadiya Pendleton, it has once again struck a cord with political parties, who had already been working on enforcing new gun laws since the Sandy Hook shooting.
What is your take on the recent gun violence and what should be done?
