Thousands of atheists are set to gather in Downtown Memphis for the 2015 American Atheists National Convention.

To say the least, news of the atheist convention has stirred up mixed reactions from local Memphians after hearing about the large atheist convention being held over Easter weekend at the Peabody Hotel in Downtown Memphis, Tennessee.

The 2015 American Atheist National Convention is set to take place April 2nd – 5th, 2015 and will feature women’s rights activist and former Muslim Ayaan Hirsi Ali, who will be speaking on April 3.

Writer and feminist Ayaan Hirsi Ali

The bestselling author, feminist and former follower of Islam ,born of Somalia, is known for her critical views now of Islam and support of women’s right and atheism.

A description on the website for the event claims the atheist convention will include some adult language and frank discussions on religion, sexuality, and personal issues.

The atheist organization American Atheists claims to have chosen the city of Memphis because of its religious background.

The group says the convention would be the perfect opportunity to show Memphians it’s OK to be an atheist because they are people too – they are your neighbors, your dentists and your mail carriers, though they have a different belief or rather a lack of belief in God.

The 2015 American Atheist National Convention is an open-to-the public event.

Here is an interesting fact according to Fox 13 Memphis:
The tri-state area of Tennessee, Mississippi and Arkansas all ban atheists from holding public office such as the rule from the Tennessee State Constitution denying anyone who doesn’t believe “in the being of God” from holding office in the civil department of the state.
