Brewer, whose previous Memphis-based movie (“The Poor and Hungry”) won the best digital feature award at the 2000 Hollywood Film Festival, has described the film as the story of a “pimp-hustler with a mid-life crisis who wants to rap.”
As for Singleton, who we all know best for his 1991’s “Boyz N the Hood” & “Poetic Justice”, he says “Craig has a really unique Southern voice. His filmic identity is linked with the city.”
Though “Hustle and Flow” seems to have been dating back since 2002 with expectations to be another low-budgeted independent film, it is now been backed by a hollywood-budget of $2.8 million for release under Universal Pictures.
Memphis GRAMMY-nominated Carlos Broady (producer/engineer/songwriter) is reported to be working on the tracks for the movie soundtrack.
The movie will also be the host to a number of local actors whose careers may start or end with the success or not success of this movie. However with the already hired cast, it looks to be another one of Craig Brewer’s independent successes. Celebrity figures with starring roles in the movie include Ludacris, who has teamed up with film director John Singleton more than once (Boyz N Da Hood, 2 Fast 2 Furious), Big Momma’s House’s Terrence Howard and Barbershop’s Anthony Anderson.
Via the internet, there is talk that Beyonce and Cuba Gooding Jr. are also supposed to be appearing in the movie.
