Bridges Mcrae Transgender Beating Case: Mistrial, Verdict Not Decided

The jury regarding Bridges Mcrae’s case could not be decided Monday. Mcrae, a former Memphis Police Officer, was charged with brutality in February of 2008 for allegedly beating a Memphis transwoman.

Mcrae was accused of using unreasonable force on Duana Johnson, a transgendered woman whom he had in custody, arrested for prostitution.

After the arrest, that following day, Mcrae was videotaped beating Johnson. This brutality stirred up a hornets nest of gay and lesbian groups, calling it a hate crime.

Mcrae was fired from the Memphis Police Department regarding the incident and was indicted November 2008 facing up to 10 years in federal prison and a maximum fine of $250,000.
