It is known that black men in America are disappearing everyday. Where are they going you ask, well let’s take a look. Black men are being killed by other black men from all sorts of violent acts. Then you also have black men living in poverty with diseases that are curable but they have waited too long now they are near death. Finally yet importantly, we have the prison system. The prison system is the new home for many African American men. The black race is only 13% of the American society yet blacks make up 44% of the prison system. How can that be you ask, it happens because a number of reasons. Racial profiling, racism in general and the typical stereotype that is placed on the black race. It has an even greater effect on the Black Male.

Black men are about half of the population in the American prison system, does that really mean black men are committing all of the crimes. That answer is certainly no, black men are not committing the most crimes, but they are leading this country in arrests and convictions. So how can black men get out of this trap and back on a path to success?

The transformation starts at a young age. Young black boys need to see other black men in a position of success, not a hustler on the streets or solely a musician. Young black boys need to see black businessmen, black politicians, black doctors and so on. Once they see black men in a position of success then it becomes real that they can achieve the goals that they have as a black man. From this point, young black boys need to realize that education is important and they need to attain education so they can improve their lives for themselves.

Authors Ronald Mincy and Salim Muwakkil both discuss these same issues of black men. Both authors show the need for education as one of the most important issues facing black men in America. With the advancement of black men comes the advancement of black women and the rest of this country. America needs to realize that for one of its people to lack the country as a whole lacks, and for one of its people to improve the country as a whole can advance.
