With the announcement of Apple’s smartphone the “Apple iPhone” the company has other cell phone makers wondering what to do next.
With the Apple iPhone, customers will be introduced to a touch-screen-controlled device that plays music on it’s widescreen iPod with touch controls, surfs the Internet, is a 2 megapixel digital camera, has Bluetooth and Wi-Fi wireless technology, a SIM card slot and is a phone that delivers voice mail and e-mail like no other cell phone.

Customers will also be able to zoom in and out with the tap of a finger on an on-screen keypad.
Vice President and research director of Jupiter Research, Michael Gartenberg, believes that the new Apple iPhone is going to put a lot of pressure on the other handset makers. Why? Because that’s where the money is.
Analysts such as Harry E. Blount of Lehman Brothers believes with the announcement of the “Apple iPhone” it will encourage customers to wait to buy the iPhone instead of an iPod. That’s one thing that they’re probably not wrong about.
The smartphone is priced at $599 for 8 gigabytes of memory, which has pushed the company’s shares up to around 8.5 percent. Inaddition to the 8 gigabytes of memory, a 4-gigabyte model for $499 of the iPhone will also be available, which will ship in June in the United States. According to reports the phones will be available in Europe in the fourth quarter and in Asia in 2008.
Apple said Cingular Wireless, the No. 1 U.S. wireless network owned by AT&T Inc., will be the company’s exclusive U.S. cellular partner.
The company hopes to sell about 10 million units in 2008, or about 1 percent of the market.
