Actor Morgan Freeman Suffers Broken Arm In Car Accident, Has Surgery

Oscar-winning actor Morgan Freeman was airlifted to The Med in Memphis after being in a one-car crash in Mississippi along with a female passenger.

Memphis-born Oscar-winning actor Morgan Freeman, 71, ended up being airlifted to the Regional Medical Center hospital (The Med) in Memphis after being in a one-car crash in Mississippi near his residency. According to reports Freeman had one passenger in the car, a woman name Demaris Meyer of Memphis, 48, who’s car he was driving, a 1997 Nissan Maxima, who was also injured in the crash.

The wreck occurred in Tallahatchie County while Freeman was driving eastbound on Mississippi Highway 32 at approximately 11:30 pm Sunday night when the car left the road and flipped several times according to Sgt. Ben Williams of the Mississippi Highway Patrol.

“He just told them he ran off the road,” Williams said in a statement.

The accident was heard by a former officer, Bill Rogers, 53, who lived on Highway 32 and witnessed the car flipping which ended up in a ditch.

“I was watching TV, and I heard the skid,” said Bill Rogers, 53. “I looked out the window and saw the car flipping head over end.”

Rogers stated that he saw the two both unconscious and he ran in the house to call 911 and when he returned back the scene, the two were then conscious, but the doors of the car were pinned shut.

Rogers’ description of the scene gives you the vague idea of a farmer’s market in the street which he described as having spices, lots of recipes, and garden tools thrown everywhere.

The accident, which occurred on a two lane road street with narrow shoulders, is believed to have been caused by rain from earlier that afternoon.

Freeman’s attorney and business partner Bill Luckett, who’s part owner of his Ground Zero Blues Club chain that opened earlier this year in Memphis, stated that the actor sustained a broken arm and other injuries and would need surgery, which took place on Monday. Freeman received surgery for fractures he sustained during the crash and has been stated to be in high spirits and joking according to Luckett.

Previously the actor was first listed as in critical condition at the hospital, but was later downgraded to serious and has been in ICU.

According to Sgt. Williams, there was no indication that alcohol or drugs were involved.

While Morgan Freeman recovers, Ground Zero Blues Club is inviting friends and fans of the actor to sign a get-well card starting Tuesday at 11am. Those who are looking to bring their own card are welcomed Tuesday and Wednesday. Ground Zero Blues Club will be delivering all messages to him.

As the actor recovers, his publicist Donna Lee has been clearing up rumors about the actor and Demaris Meyer by stating that Meyer is a friend and that Morgan Freeman is in the process of getting a divorce from his wife Myrna with whom he has been reportedly separated from.

In other news, Freeman stars in the hit movie Batman “The Dark Knight,” which he plays the role of Lucius Fox. The movie has so far remained #1 at box office for its third week with a cumulative gross of $393,751,065.
