O.J. Simpson, the football Hall of Famer star unfortunately not most known for his famous football achievements but more known for the infamous murder “trial of the century” has been sentenced to prison. Simpson, the first NFL player to rush for more than 2,000 yards in a season, was accused of murdering ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend, Ronald Goldman, in 1994. Well, Simpson, 61, today (Friday Dec. 5, 2008) was jailed for at least 15 years for the kidnap and armed robbery of two sports memorabilia dealers at a hotel in Las Vegas.
District Judge Jackie Glass said Simpson was arrogant and ignorant, and the evidence was overwhelming, so she sentenced Simpson along with his convicted accomplice, Clarence Stewart, to up to 33 years in prison.
Simpson will not be eligible for parole until serving a minimum of nine years in jail.
Simpson made an emotional appeal prior to sentencing, saying he was “sorry” and “confused”. “I stand before you today sorry,” Simpson told Judge Glass while fighting to hold back tears. “I am apologetic to the people of Nevada…. When I came here, I came here for a wedding. I didn’t come to reclaim property,” Simpson added.
Simpson went on to say that he thought he was taking advantage of an opportunity when he burst into a Las Vegas hotel room back in 2007 armed with guns to retrieve mementos that were rightfully his, including his first wife’s wedding ring.
“This was actually a very violent event,” stated Judge Glass when sentencing Simpson.
“In no way did I mean to hurt anybody, to steal anything from anyone. I didn’t want anybody else’s stuff. I just wanted my own. I realize that I was stupid. I am sorry. I didn’t know that I was doing anything illegal. I thought I was retrieving property from friends. I’m sorry, I’m sorry for all of it.”
Both Simpson and Stewart were convicted of the crimes of kidnapping and robbery back in October.
The both were found guilty on 12 charges relating to the whole entire incident which occured back on September 13 2007.
Immediately after the court sentencing on today (Friday Dec. 5, 2008), Ron Goldman’s father, Fred Goldman, and sister, Kim, expressed their pleasure in Simpson’s sentence revealing their vivid picture of Simpson as a “monster.”
“There’s never closure. Ron is always gone. What we have is satisfaction that this ‘monster’ is where he belongs behind bars,” Fred Goldman said of Simpson.
It was back in 1995 when Simpson was acquitted of murdering his former wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her friend Ron Goldman.
Simpson’s attorneys expressed their interest to appeal and asked of Judge Glass to free Simpson on bail pending the possible appeal. Glass denied the bail request.
Simpson’s two sisters, Shirley Baker and Carmelita Durio, who sat in the front row of the courtroom, along with Simpson’s daughter declined to comment after the sentencing, with Baker having but one thing to say on her way out, “It’s not over.”
