11-Month Old Recovered Safely After Carjacking

Memphian Whitney Jones says she will never leave her keys or her child in her car ever again.

Memphian Whitney Jones says she will never leave her keys or her child in her car ever again. This comes after Jones’ 2006 Chevy Cobalt was stolen from a Kroger gas station on Macon Road & Houston Levee on Tuesday while her 11-month old son was still in the car.

Jones was putting air her tires with her key still in the ignition when a stranger climbed into the driver’s seat and sped east on Macon.

Jones said that she screamed then took off on foot towards the fleeing car where her child was still strapped in his car seat.

An off-duty Memphis police officer happened to be near Jones and offered his help in tracking down the thief.

The suspect wrecked the Cobalt and took off on foot for less than half a mile. He then tried breaking into a house on Breezy Valley Drive right off Macon. When the window to the house would not open he ran into a wooded area.

Jones’ son, Cameron Jones, was recovered safely inside the car where the suspect wrecked.

The perpetrator is described as being a Hispanic male in his late 20s wearing a blue and white striped polo, tan & maroon checkered shorts, and white tennis shoes.

A suspect is currently being questioned.
