Bishop Byrne Private School In Memphis Closing Over Declining Enrollment

When it comes to private schools and you ask anyone in Memphis about them, more than likely Bishop Byrne Middle and High School located in the Whitehaven area will be on the list. Coming to the end of the 2013 school year, Bishop Byrne High School students grades 7-12 will be saying goodbye to the 46 year-old school (Red Knights) as it will be closing.

According to the Catholic Diocese of Memphis, this will be the last year that Bishop Byrne will be operating and the decision for the closure is due to low enrollment over the past few years and the increased cost of maintenance.

Memphis Catholic Middle and High School in Midtown and Bishop Byrne Middle and High School will be merging to expand courses, add dual enrollment (including college credit), enhance technology, sports and continue it’s Education That Works program in a new initiative to enhance academics.

Parents, who have children enrolled at Bishop Byrne, still have many choices to choose from if they would like to continue private and diocesan education through schools in Memphis which include Christian Brothers, Memphis Catholic, St. Agnes Academy, St. Benedict at Auburndale, among others.

Bishop Byrne, located at 1475 E. Shelby Drive, currently has around 170 students attending.
