Memphis To Revitalize Overton Square by 2012

Overton Square renovations set to begin next year. Overton Square is set to be the new home of a 53,000 sq ft grocery store. That is only one of many things that the city of Memphis has in the works to revitalize this area of midtown.

Many more shops and restaurants are set to be put in the area.

A meeting about the renovations was held March 1 and many that attended said there was not an empty seat in the house and only standing room was available. The residents of the area surrounding the square are actually quite excited about the new changes to be made to the historic area.

Controversy arose on the other occasions when talks of renovations to the square were brought up. The reason for the uproar was the idea that all of the buildings would be wiped out in order to put a grocery store and a large parking lot in their place. But the new proposal allows the historic buildings to stand and be renovated for new shops to occupy.

The building in Overton Square is set to begin in 2012.
