Handheld Devices Will Get You Fined In NY, Cell phone Ban for Memphis Drivers

One day you’re walking and suddenly you see flashing lights and think it’s for a car on the street, but the police yells, “Hey you walker stop, yeah I’m talking to you!”

One day you’re walking and suddenly you see flashing lights and think it’s for a car on the street, but the police yells, “Hey you walker stop, yeah I’m talking to you!”

So you question the police about what you were doing and he states, “You’re walking with an iPod and the headphones are plugged in your ears.” You’re then slapped with a $100 ticket that was passed by legislation. Get caught again and receive a fine for each subsequent citation.

Well, even though this hasn’t happened yet, there is a legislator from Brooklyn who is looking to propose the new law. State Senator Carl Kruger’s is looking to outlaw the use of iPods, cell phones, Blackberries, video games and other electronic handheld devices from being used while crossing the streets in NY with the bill.

The State Senator cited that a young man only 21 caused his own death by stepping off of a curb and was hit by a bus in Brooklyn in September. Just last month a 23 year-old was killed while listening to their iPod.

“If you’re so involved in your electronic device that you can’t see or hear a car coming, this is indicative of a larger problem that requires some sort of enforcement beyond the application of common sense,” Kruger said.

The legislation is stated to be introduced this week.

According to a Memphis Police Officer there will soon be a ban on cell phones while driving in the streets of Memphis. The best bet is to use the speakerphone or buy that headset or purchase a Bluetooth hands-free device.

One Memphis resident told MemphisRap.com, “I’m glad! Maybe this will wake people up when they start getting tickets for driving with a cell phone up to their ear. The cellphone not only distracts the driver and but also their visibility. If it’s that important pull over on the side of the road.”
